A chara,

Below you will find details on the updated Droichead policy, following a comprehensive review completed in March 2025. In addition, we are including an invitation to submit an expression of interest to participate in the upcoming Convention on Education, led by the Department of Education and Youth.

Updated Droichead Policy

Droichead is the integrated professional induction framework for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) and plays a central role in the continuum of teacher education.

The Teaching Council began a review of Droichead in 2023 to ensure the best support for the professional learning of teachers during the induction phase. This work also reflects the Council's commitment to ensuring a sufficient supply of registered teachers that meet the needs of the school system.

Following extensive research and consultation, the review was completed in March 2025. The updated Droichead Policy will be effective from 1 September 2026.

Join the Convention on Education

The Department of Education and Youth is inviting children and young people (8-24 years), parents and guardians, and school employees and early years educators to apply to become members of the Convention on Education.

The Convention on Education will take place in 2026 and will provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help shape Ireland's school system for decades to come and set out a shared vision for the future of education.

The Convention will comprise 150 people across 4 groups:

  • Children and young people (30 people aged 8-24 years)
  • Parents and guardians (30 people)

  • School employees and early years educators (30 people)

  • Education stakeholders (60 people)

The Convention will meet four times over weekends in 2026 to discuss key issues about the future of education:

  • 21-22 March 2026
  • 9-10 May 2026

  • 26-27 September 2026

  • 14-15 November 2026

If you are interested in having your voice heard and being considered for a place in the Convention, you can apply at the link below before Friday 16 January 2026.

Kind regards,

Bríd Murphy
