Types of notifications received
Some of the notifications received relate to allegations of professional misconduct, poor professional performance and conduct contrary to the Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers.
Employers may seek their own legal advice if they are unsure whether to notify the Teaching Council.
The majority of the notifications received have been notified to the Teaching Council by school principals, who generally act as secretary to the Board of Management. It is important that principals are aware of the obligations placed on employers under the 2023 regulations.
For further information on how to make a notification, please contact the Professional Standards team at
professionalstandards@teachingcouncil.ie.
Further information
It’s important to note that the Teaching Council's complaint and inquiry process is separate to procedures used by schools at a local level. Schools/employers of registered teachers will continue to address, and attempt to resolve issues, as they arise at local level.
An updated copy of the
Fitness to Teach - Information for Employers booklet
is
available online. This booklet details the Fitness to Teach process from the perspective of the employer.
Information for registered teachers
is also
available online in the event that a complaint is made in relation to a registered teacher.
